Breathedge 2 Story and Characters (Spoiler-Light)
The setup, from the store page
“The Breathedge Corporation unexpectedly started a galaxy-wide war, built an enormous army of Coffinbots, and attacked the largest human settlements. The Man and his faithful companion, an AI living inside his spacesuit, accidentally derailed the Corporation’s plans for a swift takeover and instantly became the number-one target of every hostile Coffinbot out there. Apparently, fate still wasn’t satisfied. Having barely survived, our heroes suddenly find themselves under attack by their own allies.”
The questions the game itself lists — “Who attacked whom? Who is Babe? Why does the Man need a Chicken? Where were we even going? And what are we supposed to do with all this duct tape?” — are the chapter’s questions too. Chapter 1 answers some and ends on a cliffhanger; the forum agrees getting “shot in the knee” is the end of the current version.
The Outskirts
Chapter 1 takes place in and around a station city in planetary orbit. The Attendant mannequin introduces it: “Welcome to the Outskirts. Our city is a monument of the decline of human intelligence … since the city’s founding, its population has dropped by 86%. The Outskirts is a favorite stop for prison convoys and sanction enforcement raids.” It has an anthem, written for the game and released separately on launch day.
Who is who
- The Man — you. Ordinary. Handy.
- Sui — the suit AI, now literally on your back with a grabber arm. The developers tried splitting Sui and the Man into two characters, “cried out of sheer horror” and put him back. Half the negative English reviews are about his voice.
- Babe — crew. Her purse is the game’s storage. “Who is Babe?” is a story question the chapter addresses.
- The Chicken — immortal. Company.
- The Bum — squats on your train and fights you for the bed.
- The Corporation and the Coffinbots — the antagonists of the first game, now at war with everyone.
- A kid with the coffinbots appeared in the demo and was cut for now; “they’ll be back. Someday.”
How the story is told
The April 2026 post explains the change from the demo: a dialogue system so that “characters will no longer try to dump important information on you while you’re in the middle of a fight”, story delivered mostly at your “home” on the train, cutscenes for major beats, and everything skippable — “all of them. Dialogue too.” A “Talk” button gives extra context to those who want it.
References
Veterans of the first game will recognise the Liner Without a Name and the Mother Station in passing, and “yes, yes, we’re naughty like that” covers the rest. The collectibles are the best place to find them — a Seamoth Blueprint poster and a “Clickedge 2” cartridge are on the collectibles list.
